Leaf season from the deck
The cabin sits around 2,260 feet. That mid-October peak everybody talks about belongs more to the 3,000 to 5,000 foot band up around the falls; color at the falls is usually mid to late October, and down here it comes later and less predictably. Typical, not a promise.
The view is why people come
The long range views off the deck do most of the work. You can sit there all morning and call it a day well spent.
The work is parking
The Linville Falls lot fills by mid-morning on fall weekends. Go early or go on a weekday. Weekdays are kinder to everything in October. The trails are open again, but the visitor center, picnic area, and campground are still closed after Helene. Get in from the 1.5-mile Parkway spur at milepost 316.4 or the Forest Service lot on Old NC 105.
The Parkway is about fifteen minutes from the cabin, and pieces of it are the drive people come for. Don't count on any long stretch being open: Linn Cove is milepost 304, Chestoa View at 320.8 has been inside the Helene closure from 317.5 to 324.7, and the 302.8 to 304.4 section by Rough Ridge has been closed for construction. Check nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm the morning you go.
Lock the dates first
Then plan the hikes around it. October dates go before anything else. Dates and rates live on Airbnb.
