Winter on this road
The community road is paved and it is steep. A normal car is fine when it is clear. Don’t fight a storm to make a Friday night arrival.
The Parkway in winter
Sections close for ice, sometimes for days, and Helene repairs have others shut regardless of weather. Check nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm the morning you plan to drive it. Grandfather is about thirty-five minutes away and it is colder and windier up there than it is at the cabin.
Stock the kitchen
Grocery on the way in, about thirty minutes down to Marion for the Food Lion or Ingles. Buy for the whole stay. Winter is the season people cook every meal here anyway.
Heat and everything else
Gas fireplace inside and a gas fire table on the deck, so there is no wood-hauling. Cell service can be thin. Check-in 3:00 PM, checkout 10:00 AM.
